Concrete Silo Inspection

Market: Manufacturing

Material Stored: Raw materials in granular and powder form

Issue: Exterior wall, spalling concrete exposing reinforcing steel.

Concrete Silo Inspection

The first image to the right shows an experienced silo engineer performing an exterior inspection of a Slip Form concrete silo. To check for exterior wall delamination, the engineer performs a concrete sounding inspection technique using a hammer.

Inspection revealed significant spalling on exterior walls which exposed steel reinforcing bars in several areas as a result of heavy usage and potential issues with original design and construction.

The second image shows an interior inspection using OSHA confined space entry procedures. The silo engineer and all inspectors entering the concrete silo are trained on appropriate OSHA and MSHA standards before arriving on site.

Professional silo inspectors can gain access to the interior by removing an air duct or other point as small as 18” square or 18” diameter. Once inside, silo engineers can diagnose interior conditions and recommend necessary remediation.

After interior inspection using a variety of industry specific techniques, a report detailing findings is completed. Professionals use this report to prioritize issues and provide customers with a repair proposal to remediate any operational or safety deficiencies of the silo.
